Deer Opener Weekend in Bemidji: More Than Just Hunting Season
It’s that time of year again. The first weekend of November means Deer Opener across Minnesota! Around Bemidji, it’s more than just hunting season. It’s a tradition that brings families together and fills the woods and hearts with excitement.
🎯 Tradition Runs Deep
For generations, families around Bemidji have been heading into the woods on opening weekend. It’s a mix of excitement, tradition, and togetherness, even for those who don’t hunt.
For me, deer hunting has always been a part of life. I started going out with my dad around the age of nine or ten. Before I could hunt, it was just the two of us. No big deer camp, just me and my dad bundled up in the stand, playing cards to pass the time and watching the woods come alive.
I remember the long walk out to the stand, about three-quarters of a mile through the dark and cold. I always tried to step right in my dad’s footprints so I wouldn’t make too much noise. Some years, the snow was so deep that I had no choice but to put my feet exactly where his had been. Those early mornings and quiet moments together are some of my favorite memories.
When I finally could hunt, I had my lucky hat and a whole lot of determination. I shot plenty of deer over the years, never a big buck, but that was never the point. We’ve always hunted for the meat and the memories that come with it.
🍳 Good Food and Family Time
Now that I have my son, my deer opener looks a little different. These days, I stay out of the stand and head up to my grandma’s house for the weekend. All of us women take over the kitchen, baking, cooking, and keeping things cozy while the hunters are out. It’s our own version of deer camp, full of laughter, stories, and way too many snacks.
🛍️ Shop Local: Sip, Shop & Stroll
If you’re staying in town this weekend, you don’t have to miss out on the fun. Downtown Bemidji is hosting the Sip, Shop & Stroll event, the perfect way to enjoy a peaceful weekend while the hunters are in the woods. Stroll through the shops, sip something warm, and get a head start on your holiday shopping. The downtown businesses always make it feel festive and cozy.
🧡 Community Spirit
Whether you’re in the stand, at your grandma’s kitchen table, or wandering downtown, Deer Opener is a special reminder of what makes Bemidji such a great place to live. Strong traditions, friendly faces, and a community that celebrates the season together.
Here’s to a safe, successful, and memory-filled Deer Opener weekend!
