Fall in Bemidji MN: Events, Fall Colors & Things to Do in 2026
Fall in Bemidji: 7 Ways to Enjoy One of the Best Seasons in Northern Minnesota
There is something about fall in Bemidji that makes you want to spend as much time outside as possible.
Cooler mornings arrive, the leaves begin changing around the lakes, farmers markets are still going strong, and weekends start filling up with festivals and community events. Whether you’ve lived in Bemidji for years, recently moved here, or are considering making northern Minnesota home, September and October are a great reminder of why this area is such a special place to live.
Here are a few ways to make the most of fall in the Bemidji area in 2026.
1. Take in the colors at the Buena Vista Fall Colors Festival
One of the area’s classic fall outings returns September 19–20, 2026 at Buena Vista Ski Area.
The Buena Vista Fall Colors Festival takes advantage of the area’s hills and scenery with horse-drawn wagon rides through the ranch and tractor rides up the ski hills and around the Continental Divide. The weekend also includes live music, craft vendors, kids’ activities, food, pumpkins and the Lumberjack Hall of Fame Museum. https://members.bemidji.org/events
It is one of those events that feels distinctly northern Minnesota — and it’s also a pretty good excuse to get outside before winter arrives.
2. Follow the fall colors instead of guessing
Fall color timing can change considerably from year to year.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources explains that September weather plays an important role in both the timing and intensity of the colors. Sunny days paired with cool nights tend to produce especially good conditions, while an early hard freeze can bring the display to a quicker end. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fall_colors/fall-colors-forecast.html
The DNR launched its 2026 fall color maps on September 10, making it easy to see where colors are progressing before heading out for a drive or hike.

3. Spend a Saturday morning downtown
Fall doesn’t mean farmers-market season is finished.
Bemidji’s Natural Choice Farmers Market continues its Saturday Market Days through October, running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Frizzell Furniture parking lot at 110 2nd Street NW. Shoppers can find fresh produce, baked goods, handmade crafts and other locally produced items. https://www.visitbemidji.com/venue/frizzell-furniture-parking-lot/
It’s an easy stop to combine with breakfast, coffee or a walk around downtown Bemidji and the waterfront.
4. Celebrate monarchs and the outdoors
Another interesting event happening September 19 is Bemidji’s 10th Annual Monarch Butterfly Festival.
The festival runs from 1–4 p.m. at the Headwaters Peace Center, 1826 Mikrantip Road SW and focuses on monarch butterflies, pollinators, native plants and the habitats that support them. The Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society is among the participating local organizations. https://www.spearheadmhas.org/events-programs/monarch-butterfly-festival
It’s a nice example of something Bemidji does particularly well: combining family activities with the outdoors and the natural environment around us.
5. Explore the trails around the Bemidji area
You don’t necessarily need an organized event to enjoy fall here.
Visit Bemidji highlights more than 160 miles of scenic hiking and biking trails in the area along with hundreds of nearby lakes. https://www.visitbemidji.com/
One of the easiest options is the trail system around Lake Bemidji State Park. For a longer ride, the Paul Bunyan State Trail connects into a much larger regional trail network, while the Heartland State Trail runs 49 miles between Park Rapids and Cass Lake and connects with the Paul Bunyan system. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/news/2026/08/20/celebrate-end-summer-minnesota-state-parks-and-recreation-areas-labor-day-weekend
That makes fall a great time for a bike ride, hike or simply an afternoon drive through the countryside.
6. Make some time for Bemidji’s arts scene
Fall isn’t only about leaves.
Watermark Art Center has its 2026 Bi-Annual Members Show on display through October 24. The galleries are open to the public with no admission charge. https://www.visitbemidji.com/event/watermark-art-center-bi-annual-members-show/
Watermark also has additional September programming, including its Poetry SLAM season opener on September 24 and an artist reception with Anna Johnson on September 26. https://watermarkartcenter.org/event/pslam-9-24/

7. Remember that fall is also a great time to explore where you live
One of our favorite things about working in real estate around Bemidji is getting to see places that even longtime residents sometimes overlook.
Drive ten or twenty minutes outside town and the scenery changes quickly. You can find lake roads, wooded acreage, small communities, farms, trails and quiet stretches of northern Minnesota that are completely different from living in town.
For someone considering moving to Bemidji, that’s an important part of understanding the area. A home search here isn’t simply about bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage. It’s also about deciding whether you’d rather be close to downtown, tucked into the woods, living on a lake, or have enough acreage that your nearest neighbor isn’t right next door.
And fall might be the best season to explore all of it.
There’s a lot to like about calling Bemidji home
Our winters may get most of the attention, and summers on the lakes are hard to beat, but fall is one of those seasons that reminds us why we enjoy living in northern Minnesota.
Get outside. Visit a local event. Try a trail you’ve never been on. Take a drive down a road you’ve always wondered about.
And if that drive happens to make you wonder what it would be like to own a home, lake place or piece of acreage there, The Hoover Group is always happy to help you explore what’s available.
